Build one clear visual hierarchy
Premium finishing works best when every technique has a role. Foil can establish a title, embossing can add quiet depth, and a spot varnish can reveal secondary artwork as light moves across the cover.
Choose foil for contrast, not just shine
Metallic, pigment and holographic foils behave differently on coated paper, cloth and leather. A press test helps confirm fine lines, solid areas and registration before the full production run.
Use the edges as a hidden canvas
Colored, gilded or patterned edges can extend the jacket artwork and create a strong shelf presence. Edge designs should account for natural page movement and the slight variation that comes with a physical book block.
Connect the outside to the inside
Coordinated endpapers, ribbons and headbands create a complete experience. Repeating one color or motif is often more refined than applying every available effect at once.
Project checklist
- Limit the cover to two or three hero finishes
- Test foil on the actual cover material
- Keep tiny reversed details away from embossing
- Coordinate edge art with endpaper color
