Set the document to final trim size
Begin with the correct finished dimensions and add bleed to every edge that carries color or imagery. Keeping critical text inside the safe area protects it from normal trimming tolerance.
Prepare color for the selected process
Most full-color work is produced in CMYK, while Pantone colors are useful when a brand tone must remain consistent. Rich black and small black text require different color builds, so they should be defined separately.
Check images and transparency
Images should be placed at an effective resolution suitable for print. Flattening is not always required, but transparent effects, overprints and complex blends should be reviewed in the final PDF.
Package a clean approval file
Embed fonts, include only the final dieline and remove unused layers. A clearly named PDF, reference mockup and written specification make the proofing process faster and easier to audit.
Project checklist
- Use at least 3 mm bleed unless specified otherwise
- Export a PDF with fonts embedded
- Review overprint preview
- Include a low-resolution visual reference
